How a Tile Installation Runs, Stage by Stage
Most of what determines whether tile lasts twenty years happens before the first piece goes on the wall. Here is the order we work in, and roughly how long each stage takes on a typical tile shower — a job we quote at 5–10 days on site.
1. Demo and substrate prep — 1–2 days
Old tile and backer come out, and we get to look at what is actually behind them. Rot around a shower pan, a floor that has deflected, studs out of plane — this is where those turn up. The substrate then gets flattened and made rigid, because tile does not bend and a wavy subfloor telegraphs straight through to lippage and cracked grout.
2. Waterproofing the wet areas — 1 day plus cure
Showers, wet rooms and tub surrounds get a continuous waterproofing membrane — Schluter KERDI sheet or RedGard liquid — carried over the curb, into the niche and up behind the bench. Corners and changes of plane get banded. This layer is invisible in the finished bathroom and is the single thing most responsible for whether it is still dry in a decade.
3. Layout and dry-fit — half a day
We set the layout before mixing any mortar: where the full tiles land, where the cuts fall, how the grout lines meet the niche and the drain. Done right, the eye-level courses are full tiles and the slivers end up low and out of the sightline. Skipping this is why some tile jobs read as slightly wrong without the owner being able to say why.
4. Setting the tile — 2–4 days
Mortar is back-buttered and combed to the tile format, and we check coverage as we go rather than at the end. Large-format porcelain gets a leveling system so no edge sits proud of its neighbour. A kitchen backsplash on its own is a much shorter version of this stage — 1–3 days start to finish.
5. Grout and cure — 1–2 days
Mortar cures before grout goes in — rushing this traps moisture and shows up later as discoloured grout lines. Movement joints go in at changes of plane and at the perimeter, filled with silicone rather than grout so the assembly can move without cracking.
6. Seal, clean and walk through — half a day
Natural stone and cement-based grout get sealed; porcelain generally does not need it. Then we walk the job with you, in the light you will actually live with, and note anything you want adjusted before the crew leaves.
What Moves a Tile Quote Up or Down
Two bathrooms of identical size can quote thousands apart. These are the five things that usually explain the gap.
Tile format
Large-format porcelain looks simple and is the least forgiving thing to set. It demands a much flatter substrate, more leveling hardware and slower, wetter cutting. A 12"×24" plank and a 48"×48" slab are not the same job even at the same square footage.
What is under the tile
A flat, sound, rigid substrate needs almost nothing. A bouncy floor, an out-of-plane wall, or rot found behind an old shower pan adds prep days before any tile is set — and it is the most common reason a real quote lands above a phone estimate.
Pattern complexity
A straight stack or running bond is quick. Herringbone, chevron, a picture-framed floor or a book-matched feature wall multiply the cuts, the waste factor and the layout time. The material cost barely moves; the labour does.
How much of it is wet
A backsplash needs no waterproofing system. A curbless walk-in wet room needs a fully bonded membrane, a sloped pan and banded corners throughout. Waterproofing scope is often the largest single line separating a $4,000 shower from a $12,000 one.
Demo and disposal
Pulling old tile — especially tile set in a mud bed, or thinset over old drywall — is dusty, slow work, and the debris has to go somewhere. New construction skips all of it. If you are replacing tile rather than tiling fresh, expect demo and haul-away to be a visible line on the estimate rather than a rounding error.
